Seated Shan Buddha in bhumisparsha mudra, gilded wood, Myanmar
At the center of the forehead, the urna is represented here by a stylized red unalome, a Buddhist spiritual motif evoking the path to enlightenment. It consists of a spiral (the initial movement of existence), loops (obstacles and learning), then an ascending line leading to a final point, symbol of illumination.
The Shan style is distinguished here by a full face with softened features and slightly compact proportions, typical of productions from the princely states.
