Bronze Figure of Hayagriva, Tibet
This ritual bronze figure represents Hayagrīva in yab-yum with his consort Nairātmyā, deities of Vajrayāna tantric Buddhism. He is depicted in a dynamic pratyalīḍha posture, legs spread, surrounded by multiple arms wielding ritual attributes. His expressive face, with bulging eyes and gaping mouth, is surmounted by flaming hair from which emerges a horse’s head, characteristic of this manifestation.
Considered a protector of the Dharma, Hayagrīva is one of the emanations of Avalokiteśvara, of which he embodies the wrathful aspect. He is invoked to repel obstacles and harmful forces hindering spiritual practice.
