String: Scandinavian design with variable geometry

Designed in Sweden by Kajsa and Nisse Strinning, the String system is one of the most iconic wall storage solutions in post-war Scandinavian design. Its design is based on a simple principle: a lightweight structure fixed to the wall, allowing you to arrange the shelves freely according to your needs and the available space.

Original String label dating this piece to the late 1950s or early 1960s

This shelf retains a period String label bearing, among other things, the wording “String Bokhyllan – The Ladder Shelf” and “String Design AB – Stockholm Sweden”. This detail confirms the set dates from the 1950s or 1960s and directly documents its Swedish origin.

The String system’s linear, pared-back, highly graphic structure dresses a wall in a way that is both practical and aesthetic, without weighing it down visually. Its shallow depth is particularly well suited to a living room, bedroom, or office, where it can hold books, decorative objects, and small green plants.

The system’s modularity also makes it ideal as a display unit in a shop, gallery, or other commercial space. The shelf layout can then evolve depending on the objects displayed, while retaining the understated character typical of 1960s Scandinavian furniture.
