String wall shelves

String wall shelves are among the most iconic creations of Scandinavian design. Conceived in the early 1950s by Kajsa and Nisse Strinning, this Swedish modular storage system became a benchmark in wall furniture thanks to its visual lightness, high modularity, and timeless aesthetic.

First presented in 1949 as part of a competition organized by publisher Bonnier, the system was marketed from the early 1950s. Its success was immediate and helped define a new way of furnishing interiors. Both a designer wooden shelving unit and an evolving storage system, it meets the needs of modern homes while retaining remarkable elegance.

The String system continued to evolve through the 1960s and the 1970s. New configurations, different wood species, uprights in several colors, and numerous accessories expanded the range. This designer wall bookcase can be assembled to suit your needs: a floating desk, a storage and display unit, or a wall composition with countless combinations.

Today, String bookcases appeal as much to fans of vintage Scandinavian shelving as to architects and interior designers. Their minimalist lines stand the test of time and fit just as well in contemporary decor as in a minimalist interior or a Haussmann apartment.
