Among the most representative systems are String wall shelves and Poul Cadovius wall-mounted shelving systems, icons of Scandinavian design. This concept was also developed in numerous variations by Belgian manufacturers such as MDK (Meubelfabriek De Kraker) and Combineurop, as well as in the Netherlands by designers such as Louis van Teeffelen & Wébé.

During the 1970s, this exploration of modularity continued with manufacturers such as Ligne Roset, notably through certain designs by Michel Ducaroy.
