Charles & Ray Eames and the Lounge Chair: a new approach to modern comfort
Designed in 1956 by Charles & Ray Eames, the Lounge Chair 670, paired with its Ottoman 671, marks a major evolution in lounge seating. Inspired by the traditional club chair, it offers a lighter, more modern interpretation, combining enveloping comfort with techniques drawn from industrial production.
The structure is based on an assembly of molded wood shells, paired with independent cushions, offering both flexibility and support. This design provides a clear reading of the elements while ensuring lasting comfort, a hallmark of the Eames’ work.
The rosewood version showcases a wood with deep, contrasting grain, used in the model’s early editions. It gives the set a strong visual presence, enhanced by the contrast with the metal elements and leather.
Distributed in Europe by Vitra, the Lounge Chair stands out as one of the most iconic pieces of 20th-century design, sought after for its build quality and the balance between aesthetics and use.
