Herman Miller – 20th-century American designer furniture: founded in the United States, Herman Miller became one of the leading manufacturers of modern design and played a decisive role in the development of post-war American furniture. From the 1940s onwards, and especially during the 1950s and 1960s, the company combined creativity, industrial innovation and mass production for both residential and professional spaces.
Under the direction of George Nelson, the company’s design director, Herman Miller collaborated with several key figures in American design, including Charles & Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Girard. This approach gave rise to chairs, armchairs, tables and office furniture that have become landmarks of 20th-century design.
The collaboration with Charles & Ray Eames occupies a central place in this history. Herman Miller notably handled the production and distribution of their moulded plywood seating, their famous fibreglass shells and series such as the Wire Chairs, Aluminium Group and Soft Pad Group. The Lounge Chair & Ottoman, launched in 1956, combines moulded plywood, wood veneers and leather and remains one of the company’s most iconic armchairs. The RAR, DAR, DSR and DAW models illustrate their exploration of shell chairs and interchangeable bases.
This production also profoundly transformed office furniture. Aluminium, steel, plywood and synthetic materials made it possible to develop lighter, more ergonomic seating adapted to new uses. Herman Miller’s creations thus stand at the intersection of domestic furniture, interior architecture and professional workspace design.
In Europe, the history of Eames designs is also closely linked to Vitra, which obtained the manufacturing licence for the European market in the late 1950s. This parallel distribution explains the presence, depending on the period and market, of Herman Miller or Vitra versions of several models that are now highly sought after by vintage furniture enthusiasts.
Original Herman Miller pieces are distinguished by the quality of their construction, the variety of their materials and their importance in the history of American industrial design.
