The “La Fonda” series
Designed in 1961 by Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller, the “La Fonda” series is part of Alexander Girard‘s project for the La Fonda del Sol restaurant, in the Time-Life Building in New York.
This program marks a significant evolution in the Eames’ work. To meet the site’s constraints, Girard desired seating lower than the tables, preserving spatial legibility and visual fluidity. The Eames then developed a specific shell combined with a unique central base.
The “La Fonda” range includes several variants — armchairs, chairs, and tables — produced in the early 1960s. Originally designed for contract use, it was later integrated into the Herman Miller catalog and more widely distributed.
These models are distinguished by their fiberglass shell, integrated upholstery, and sculptural cast aluminum base, characteristic of modernist American design.
