George Nelson Coconut Armchair for Herman Miller, 1955
The Coconut armchair, designed in 1955 by George Nelson, is based on a simple, radical idea: an open coconut wedge. This approach breaks with the dominant references of the time, still largely influenced by aeronautical forms or Streamline design.
With this model, Nelson introduces a freer, more experimental dimension, foreshadowing certain formal explorations later developed in 1960s design. The wide-open shell favors everyday comfort and freedom of posture, while retaining strong graphic clarity.
The contrast between the white outer structure and the black leather seat contributes to the model’s identity. This reversal of the usual codes strengthens the armchair’s visual presence, while highlighting the attention paid to balances of form and material.
Set on a chromed tubular steel base, the Coconut armchair combines stability, visual lightness, and comfort. Published by Herman Miller, it stands out as one of the most distinctive pieces in George Nelson’s work.
