The Jangada Armchair by Jean Gillon, an Icon of Brazilian Design
The Jangada armchair, created by Jean Gillon in 1968, is one of the major works of Brazilian modernist design. Its name references the jangadas, traditional rafts used by fishermen in the Nordeste, whose structure and nets inspired its aesthetic. Crafted in solid wood, likely rosewood, it combines an architectural frame with a suspended seat made of braided nylon rope, evoking a fishing net, upon which rest thick leather cushions.
With its low lines, exposed solid wood structure, and generous suspended cushions, the Jangada is reminiscent of the famous MP-81 armchair by Percival Lafer, another major figure in Brazilian modernist design.
A true demonstration of Italma Wood Art’s craftsmanship, this vintage armchair combines exceptional comfort, noble materials, and technical innovation. Originally designed with a matching footrest, it is presented here with its original ottoman.
