Seated Shan Buddha in bhumisparsha mudra, gilded wood, Burma

Large votive image of the Buddha in carved, lacquered, and gilded wood, from the Shan States in Burma, dating to the 19th century. This sculpture is distinguished by its rich surface, the density of its material, and the quality of its modeling. The face, with full and softened features, as well as the slightly compact proportions, are characteristic of Shan productions.

The bhūmisparśa mudrā, or “earth witness gesture,” evokes the moment when the Buddha calls upon the earth to witness his enlightenment, marking his victory over Māra (Maravijaya). This iconography, central to Theravāda Buddhism, is widespread in Burma and throughout the Buddhist world.

The surface features black lacquer covered with gilding, now patinated, revealing tonal variations and wear consistent with its age. The piece maintains a cohesive appearance, without notable breaks, testifying to masterful traditional craftsmanship.

This type of votive sculpture is generally crafted with a throne carved from the same block, as illustrated below. However, it was not uncommon for these fragile elements to disappear over time due to the humid climate. In some cases, the lower part was cut off, likely for conservation purposes. The marked erosion of the wood under the base suggests an old intervention here.

Provenance: former collection of Claude de Marteau. Sold with certificate.

This type of sculpture is widely documented, notably in the book Burmese Buddhist Sculpture – The Johan Möger Collection, Otto Karow, White Lotus, p. 85.
