Buddha with elephants Ava / Shan

  • Shakyamuni Buddha taking the earth as witness (Bhumisparsa mudra) is seated in padmasana on his throne, festooned with lotus leaves and supported by four elephants.
  • The elephant is one of the most popular symbols of Buddhism and is associated with abundance, fertility, strength… and mental strength: lucidity and clairvoyance. It is also the mount of kings.
  • This Buddha image is carved in one piece and covered with lacquer (Thayo), Ava style, Shan States, 18th/19th century.
  • Provenance: Estate of art dealer Claude de Marteau.
