Open Rosewood Sideboard – Florence Knoll

Open low sideboard in rosewood, with a white marble top veined with grey. Chrome-plated steel base, designed by Florence Knoll for Knoll International, 1960s edition. Likely a variant of model 2542 no longer in production or perhaps a custom-made piece.

Florence Knoll Open Low Sideboard for Knoll International

This open low sideboard in rosewood, designed by Florence Knoll for Knoll International and produced in the 1960s, features the modernist lines characteristic of the designer’s storage furniture. The wooden cabinet rests on a slender chrome-plated steel base and is topped with an elegant white marble slab veined with grey.

With its 95.5 cm width, its proportions match those of Florence Knoll’s small Two Position Credenzas. However, this open version, simply equipped with an interior shelf and without doors or drawers, seems much less documented. It could be a variant no longer in the catalog, similar in proportions to model 2542, or possibly a custom-made piece.

Its open design gives it great versatility today. In a living room, it can serve as a small sideboard to hold books, ceramics, sculptures, or decorative objects. Its low height and the cable pass-through installed in the back by a previous owner also make it very easy to use as a TV cabinet, with two levels available for audiovisual equipment and accessories.

In an office, it will be a particularly practical open storage unit for books, binders, documents, or work items. Its very discreet design allows it to maintain an elegant presence without cluttering the space.

This sideboard can also be combined with its closed counterpart of the same dimensions. Placed side by side, the two elements then form an enfilade of approximately 190 cm, almost the width of Florence Knoll’s large 2544 model. This combination allows for the proportions of a large credenza while alternating closed storage and open space.

The contrast between rosewood, light marble, and chrome-plated steel perfectly summarizes Florence Knoll’s approach: functional furniture with rigorous lines, where the quality of materials and proportions are sufficient to create elegance.
