Florence Knoll Furniture – American Modernist Design and Knoll Associates Furniture
A selection of furniture designed by Florence Knoll, a major figure in 20th-century American modernist design. An architect and designer trained under Mies van der Rohe and Eliel Saarinen, she played an essential role in the development of Knoll Associates after the war, establishing a coherent vision of contemporary furniture and interior design.
Florence Knoll’s creations are distinguished by their clean lines, architectural rigour and careful attention to proportions. Tables, desks, sideboards, seating and storage furniture favour high-quality materials such as chrome-plated steel, marble, wood and premium laminates, reflecting an approach directly inherited from International Modernism.
This selection brings together American modernist furniture from the 1950s and 1960s, alongside other creations produced by Knoll and works by designers associated with the international modernist movement.
Unlike other designers of the 1950s and 1960s, Florence Knoll did not develop an extensive collection of wall lights or floor lamps. Her work in lighting nevertheless includes several notable designs, including an elegant marble lamp that became emblematic of post-war American design. This approach to modern lighting naturally complements the work of the major furniture and lighting designers whose creations were produced by Knoll throughout the 20th century.
