This spectacular XXL palm tree floor lamp by Hans Kögl forms a true botanical sculpture in black and gold metal, standing nearly 1.85 meters tall. Three tiers of palm fronds house a total of nine light sources, distributed within the foliage and progressively staggered around the trunk.
The composition plays on the contrast between the glossy black, the gilded surfaces, and the light that filters between the leaves. When unlit, the floor lamp retains an almost graphic presence; when lit, the metallic foliage becomes much more theatrical, multiplying shadows, reflections, and golden glints. With its imposing dimensions, it belongs to the grand decorative luminaires designed to truly occupy space.
A palm tree floor lamp documented in the Hans Kögl archives
An archive page from Kögl Wohnlicht dedicated to the PALMEN series now allows this floor lamp to be precisely placed within the company’s production. The catalog presents several variants constructed on a very clear principle: models with one, two, or three stems, from three to nine lights, offered in two main heights of 180 and 220 cm.
The most interesting comparison with our example is model 10297, described in the archive catalog as a three-stem, nine-light floor lamp, 180 cm high with a diameter of approximately 110 cm.

Kögl Wohnlicht Archives, PALMEN series: floor lamps 10237 to 10397. The catalog offered different heights and configurations from three to nine lights, as well as a finish in antique gold leaf or combining gold leaf, glossy black, and a gilded patina.
The palm tree as a luminous sculpture
The palm tree is one of the most recognizable motifs in the botanical repertoire associated with Hans Kögl. The plant is no longer simply used as an ornament: it entirely constitutes the luminaire. Trunk, leaves, and crown become its structure, while the bulbs partly disappear into the metallic vegetation.
This spectacular treatment of botanical forms naturally links Kögl floor lamps to the Hollywood Regency style, where gilded metal, large dimensions, and exotic decor play a significant role. The palm tree also appears in the universe of Maison Jansen, though no direct lineage between the two houses should be established: Kögl develops its own vocabulary here, particularly identifiable by the profusion and ornamental treatment of its foliage.
Hans Kögl palm tree floor lamps are today among the most sought-after creations from this production. German examples attributed to the 1970s regularly appear on the design market, while the company’s archives now allow for the precise identification of several references from the PALMEN series.
Acquired directly from its first owner, this example has reached us in remarkable condition, with only a few localized traces of oxidation consistent with its age. Its XXL format, its nine lights, and especially its rare black and gold finish make it as much a luminaire as a true element of interior architecture.
