Founded in 1880 by Jean-Henri Jansen, the company quickly expanded its activities into cabinetmaking, interior decoration and the creation of bespoke furniture and lighting for an international clientele.

Originally an antiques dealer, Jansen developed a highly distinctive decorative vocabulary, combining classical European references, exotic influences and a pronounced taste for precious materials. During the 1920s and 1930s, the house became truly international, with offices in London, New York, Cairo, Buenos Aires and Rio, spreading the “Jansen style” around the world. Under the direction of Stéphane Boudin, it contributed to major decoration and interior design projects for private residences, embassies and prestigious buildings.

Its furniture production is distinguished by its great diversity: brass coffee tables and side tables, gilt-metal consoles sometimes imitating bamboo, extendable dining tables in patinated bronze, and furniture featuring naturalistic and sometimes Japanese-inspired decoration. These creations often combine refined construction with carefully worked surfaces, patinas and decorative details in chased bronze characteristic of the house.

During the 1960s, lighting took on a particularly spectacular role within this decorative repertoire. Maison Jansen notably developed the famous “Palmier” and “Agave” table lamps, wall lights and floor lamps, produced in various forms and sizes. During the 1970s, several of these models were associated with the workshops of Christian Techoueyres, who produced sculptural lighting for Jansen in cut brass soldered with tin.

Today, Maison Jansen lamps, like the furniture produced by the house, are sought after for their quality of craftsmanship, decorative character and distinctive place in the history of 20th-century design and interior decoration.
