Pulegoso glass, a Murano glassmaking technique

The term pulegoso, from the Italian pulega (“bubble”), refers to glass with multiple air inclusions, visible as irregular bubbles distributed throughout. This characteristic texture gives the material a dense and slightly opaque appearance.

This effect is achieved during manufacturing by introducing specific agents, such as carbonates, which cause bubbles to form within the glass. The surface becomes vibrant and irregular, contributing to a softer, more nuanced light diffusion.

Developed in the 1920s on the island of Murano by Napoleone Martinuzzi, this technique was notably used by Venini, a major figure in 20th-century Italian glassware.
