The vintage floor lamp: shedding light on lighting and interior architecture
The vintage floor lamp is primarily an ambient light fixture. Unlike a suspension lamp or a table lamp, it is designed to diffuse indirect or semi-indirect light that illuminates the volume of a room without glare. Placed near a sofa, an armchair, or in a corner, it helps create a warm atmosphere while structuring the space. Many models are also equipped with an adjustable reading light or a dimmer, allowing for the combination of functional and ambient lighting.

From the 1950s, European designers transformed the floor lamp into a true element of interior architecture. Each movement developed its own vision of light: Scandinavian creators favored wood essences, with soft diffusion; Italian designers explored adjustable reflectors, Murano glass, and technical innovations; while creators of the Hollywood Regency movement or French houses primarily sought a sculptural and decorative presence. Much more than a simple light source, the floor lamp thus became a centerpiece of furniture.

Scandinavian Floor Lamps
Scandinavian floor lamps prioritize simplicity of lines, balanced proportions, and the use of essences such as teak or rosewood. Their light, generally soft and diffuse, is designed to create a comfortable ambiance without dominating the space. Creations by Temde Leuchten, Fog & Mørup, Louis Poulsen, or other Nordic publishers illustrate this pursuit of functional elegance where lighting quality is as important as the luminaire’s design.
Italian Floor Lamps
Italian floor lamps often adopt a more experimental approach. Creations by Gino Sarfatti, Stilnovo, or Arteluce explore adjustable reflectors, metal structures, blown glass, and new lighting technologies to offer modular light adapted to different uses. These models are now among the major references in 20th-century Italian design.
Hollywood Regency and Maison Jansen Floor Lamps
From the 1970s, Hollywood Regency floor lamps favored an approach where decor became as important as light. Brass, chrome, or gilded finishes multiply reflections and fully contribute to the room’s ambiance. Creations by Hans Kögl, recognizable by their metal gilded plant compositions, as well as the works of Maison Jansen, perfectly embody this refined aesthetic where the floor lamp becomes a true decorative object.

Compatibility with LED Bulbs
Incandescent and halogen bulbs equipping vintage floor lamps can now be replaced by compatible LED equivalents. In the vast majority of cases, no modification to the luminaire is necessary to enjoy more energy-efficient lighting that emits less heat.
