Dayak Hampatong protective figure from Borneo

Southeast Asia, Borneo, Dayak culture, 19th century

Carved from a single piece of wood, this Dayak Hampatong protective figure features a deliberately stylised silhouette with exaggerated proportions. The head, larger than the body, shows deeply incised features and a frontal gaze, enhancing the work’s presence in a stance that suggests vigilance and protection.

The surface retains tool marks and the wood’s natural grain—hallmarks of Borneo tribal carvings, where the material fully contributes to the object’s visual and spiritual power. A stylised headdress also underscores the figure’s ritual character.

Ancestral Hampatong figures were traditionally placed near villages, longhouses, or burial sites. They played a protective role and served as intermediaries between the world of the living, the ancestors, and the spirits.

With its frontal presence and direct expression, this antique Dayak work belongs to the tradition of Borneo protective figures, linked to ancestor worship and the animist beliefs of the Dayak peoples.

Two other comparable hampatong figures are also available; see below.
