Dayak Hampatong Ancestral Figure, ironwood, Indonesia, Borneo, early 18th century.
These guardians were erected inside the village, to protect the community, in this case probably Ngadju or Ot Danum.
Very good condition, with a beautiful gray patina and some vestiges of polychromy. Few wear marks or accidents (minor / normal wear).
Provenance: Former collection of Claude de Marteau.
Sold with certificate of origin.

Dayak Hampatong Ancestral Figure, Laboratory Dating

Radiocarbon testing indicates an age of 194 ± 21 BP. Calibration (95.4% probability) reveals several chronological ranges, the primary one being between 1735 and 1806 AD (approx. 66%), along with a secondary probability around the 20th century (approx. 22%). All data are consistent with an 18th-century dating, most likely between 1735 and 1806.
