Ancestral Figures cotton gin, Timor

850,00

  • In Timor, textiles are traditionally woven from locally grown cotton, hand-spun on spindles. Wooden gins extract the seeds from sun-dried raw cotton bolls. The instrument is adorned with figures, probably ancestral weavers who have handed down their skills from generation to generation.
  • Both sides are identically carved, and the uprights feature traditional East Timorese diamond motifs.
  • Carved from very hard wood, with an even sheen of patina. Perfect working condition, 19th century.
  • Provenance: Claude de Marteau Collection
  • Sold with certificate of origin.
  • H 37 cm x W 45 cm (overall) x D 11 cm
