Large Burmese Adorant in Gilded Wood
€2800,00
- Votive sculpture of the disciple and adoring monk Moggallana in lacquered and gilded wood, Burma (Myanmar), Kaunbong period (1752-1885), late 19th century.
- These sculptures were commissioned from craftsmen and placed in temples (or private altars) near the Buddha, to mark his fervor and devotion in order to obtain spiritual merit and thus improve his karma.
- The back of the monastic robe, which normally drags slightly on the floor, has long since disappeared, but the rest of the work is in a very good state of preservation.
- The intensity of expression and contemplative posture are particularly accomplished when compared to other adoring sculptures from the same period.
- This work is to be compared with an example in the Asian Art Museum of San Fransisco under inventory number B60S599 (The Avery Brundage Collection), Gallery 11
- Provenance: Claude de Marteau Collection
- Sold with certificate of origin.
- H 57 cm x W 32 cm x D 43 cm
- Due to the delicacy of this sculpture (not necessarily fragile) this piece will be delivered exclusively by carrier, packed on a mini wooden pallet.
