Pair of Oak Chairs by René-Jean Caillette – 1950s
This pair of blond oak chairs was designed by René-Jean Caillette around the turn of the 1950s. They belong to the same set as the René-Jean Caillette folding table and the matching pair of armchairs currently offered on our site.
A Set Documented by an Archive Photograph
An old photograph published in “Nouvel Habitat – Forme Nouvelle” precisely shows these three types of seating and the table together in the same arrangement: the table in the center, with the armchairs and chairs placed around it.
This image provides a particularly interesting insight into how René-Jean Caillette conceived furniture during this period: not as a succession of isolated pieces, but as a coherent ensemble designed to furnish the dining room.
The chairs echo the same blond oak and design language as the armchairs, in a lighter and more direct version. Their design still combines certain elements inherited from French furniture of the 1930s and 40s with lines that are already more taut and functional, characteristic of 1950s furniture.
Chairs, Armchairs, and Table Now Reunited
Having the chairs, armchairs, and table available today allows for a direct comparison with the pieces visible in the archive photograph. The set forms a particularly coherent testament to René-Jean Caillette’s work in the early 1950s.
The chairs can naturally be used alone, around a table or a desk, but their association with the other elements gives the ensemble a significantly stronger presence and historical interpretation.
