Grand Astrid Sideboard by Oswald Vermaercke for V-Form

Developed by Oswald Vermaercke for the Belgian publisher V-Form, the Astrid series belongs to a generation of 1960s Belgian furniture characterized by a freer and more sophisticated interpretation of Scandinavian influences. The model’s name is said to refer to Princess Astrid of Belgium, born in 1962, a period corresponding to the development of this series.

This grand sideboard is distinguished by its particularly balanced visual rhythm, alternating large teak surfaces, plays of openings, and subtly integrated details on the facade. The wood grain, very present and contrasting, strongly animates the doors while maintaining an extremely understated overall appearance.

The design of the slender and slightly angular base visually lightens the furniture’s significant proportions. This floating sensation is reinforced by the discreet recess of the base beneath the main body of the sideboard, a process frequently used in V-Form’s high-end productions.

The deliberately discreet handles fully contribute to the graphic continuity of the facade. The ensemble develops a particularly architectural presence without ever falling into excessive rigidity, a balance that is among the most remarkable aspects of Oswald Vermaercke’s creations.

The surfaces have been carefully restored while preserving the natural nuances of the teak and the depth of its grain developed over time.
