Charles Vandenhove and the Furniture of the Lucien Brull Residence

This modernist Charles Vandenhove desk was designed for the Student House at the Lucien Brull Residence in Liège, as part of the university architectural development of the 1960s. Its design reflects a restrained, structured approach to furniture: well-balanced proportions, straightforward use, rational construction, and careful attention to the material’s presence.

Trained at Saint-Luc Liège and then at La Cambre, Charles Vandenhove developed early on a vision of architecture attentive to the reality of use. Close to post-war modernism without adopting its formulas dogmatically, he inscribed his work in a search for clarity, permanence, and constructive precision.

This modernist desk fully embodies this approach. Designed for a collective environment, it favours efficiency without sacrificing genuine design quality. The sobriety of its line, the logic of its structure, and the legibility of its volume make it a particularly representative piece of Belgian design from this period.

Documented in the Lucien Brull University Residence booklet, this model presents particular interest both as functional furniture and as evidence of an architectural programme identified in Liège’s 20th-century history.
