Charles Vandenhove modernist stool: design and designer’s biography
This modernist stool by Charles Vandenhove was created around 1960 for the Maison des Étudiants – Résidence Lucien Brull in Liège. Designed for an iconic landmark of student life in Liège, this piece illustrates a clear and structured vision: functionality, bold lines, and solid plywood construction.
Trained at Saint-Luc Liège after the war, then at La Cambre, Charles Vandenhove was influenced by the teachings of Victor Bourgeois and discovered, through major figures like Le Corbusier and Gio Ponti, an architecture rooted in practical use. His career began in 1951 with Lucien Kroll before achieving full recognition in the 1960s–70s, with major public projects featured in the specialized press. This stool is a perfect example of this quest for functional design rooted in daily life.
Dating from this period of intense development, this model reflects a search for pragmatic and lasting elegance. A rare piece and a witness to Liège’s architectural history, it is ideal for a contemporary interior seeking an authentic 20th-century Belgian design signature.
