A modernist desk designed for the Lucien Brull Residence
Modernist desk by Charles Vandenhove for the Maison des Étudiants – Lucien Brull Residence in Liège, c. 1960. Designed for an iconic location in Liège student life, this piece embodies a clear and structured vision: functionality, bold lines, and solid construction showcasing the natural beauty of wood.
Trained at Saint-Luc Liège after the war, then at La Cambre, Charles Vandenhove was influenced by Victor Bourgeois’s teaching and associated with the great figures of his time, from Le Corbusier to Gio Ponti. His career began in 1951 alongside Lucien Kroll, with a shared commitment to addressing real needs, far from theoretical architecture. Recognition came in the 1960s-70s, through major projects in Liège and across Europe, widely published.
From this period of full expansion, this desk embodies pragmatic, elegant, and enduring modernism. A rare piece, witness to Liège’s architectural history, ideal for a contemporary interior seeking an authentic signature of 20th-century Belgian design.
