Designed by Tobia & Afra Scarpa for Gavina in the early 1960s, the Bastiano sofa is considered one of the great classics of modernist Italian design. The model is distinguished by its exposed solid rosewood structure, whose sober and architectural lines highlight the quality of the wood as well as the minimalist design characteristic of the Italian duo.

The Bastiano rests on a deliberately legible construction where the cushions seem simply placed within the structure. This innovative approach, developed by the Scarpas for Gavina, contributes to the model’s particularly light and rational aesthetic. The deep seats and large black leather cushions create a balance between generous comfort and geometric rigor.

Produced by Gavina before a portion of its models were integrated into the Knoll catalog in the late 60s, the Bastiano is recognized today as one of the major creations of Tobia & Afra Scarpa. The exposed woodwork, low proportions, and use of independent cushions would lastingly influence Italian furniture in the following decades.

This piece features a rosewood structure with contrasting grain accompanied by black leather cushions. The leathers have been cleaned, nourished with a moisturizing balm, and then redyed by a professional. The upper faces of the seat cushions have also been replaced for the sake of conservation and daily use.

The springs maintain excellent firmness despite visible cracking in the original plasticized sleeves. The leather armrests show marked creases consistent with the age of the model, without structural weakness or tears.
