4-seater Bastiano sofa in black leather by Tobia Scarpa for Gavina
Designed by Tobia Scarpa for Gavina in the late 1960s, the Bastiano sofa has become a classic of Italian modernist design. This 4-seater model is distinguished by its generous proportions, minimalist architecture, and exposed solid wood frame—key characteristics of Tobia Scarpa’s work during this period.
The Bastiano’s design relies on a deliberately clear construction where the cushions appear to be simply placed within the frame. This innovative approach highlights the piece’s structure while creating a particularly sober and balanced silhouette. The horizontal lines, wide armrests, and deep seating reinforce the model’s architectural feel.
This piece features black leather cushions paired with a frame of rigorous lines typical of early Italian productions by Gavina. The ensemble creates an aesthetic that is both warm and minimalist, iconic of 1960s and 70s Italian furniture. We are offering a matching pair of Bastiano armchairs from the same owner.
Before some Gavina models were integrated into the Knoll catalog, the first Bastiano editions produced by Gavina helped establish Tobia Scarpa as a major figure in 20th-century European design. Today, the model remains highly sought after for its build quality, low proportions, and generous comfort.
Thanks to its timeless design and noble materials, the Bastiano sofa maintains a strong presence in both modernist interiors and more minimalist contemporary environments.
