The Bastiano sofa designed by Tobia & Afra Scarpa ranks among the most iconic creations of Italian modernist design. Originally conceived in the 1960s and later reissued by KnollStudio, this model is distinguished by its sober, rigorous architecture combined with exceptionally generous comfort.

The Bastiano design is based on a deliberately exposed structure where each element fully contributes to the furniture’s aesthetic. The horizontal lines, wide armrests, and low proportions reflect the architectural approach developed by Tobia Scarpa during this period. The model maintains a strong visual presence while avoiding any decorative heaviness.

This 3-seater example features an ebonized oak frame accompanied by high-density foam cushions upholstered in red aniline leather. Aniline leather, prized for its suppleness and depth of color, reveals a more natural and vibrant surface than traditional pigmented leathers.

The frame retains its original “Studio Knoll Tobia Scarpa” label, attesting to its KnollStudio edition circa 2000. The cushions are marked “KNOLL” on the reverse.

The sofa presents a very fine overall state of preservation, suggesting moderate and careful use over time. Only very slight normal wear marks are noted on the feet, consistent with the model’s age and use.

Thanks to the balance between noble materials, minimalist lines, and manufacturing quality, the Bastiano sofa remains today a major reference in contemporary furniture edited by KnollStudio and a sought-after piece by collectors of 20th-century Italian design.
