Sciolari Chrome Ceiling Light – Leola Edition, 1970s
This chrome ceiling light by Gaetano Sciolari is part of the European production of the 1960s–1970s, characterized by a search for balance between structure and light. It is probable that this model was manufactured in Belgium by SA Boulanger, then distributed in Germany by Leola, following a common distribution pattern at the time. The documented models, in any case, exhibit strictly identical characteristics.
Its design also allows for wall-mounted installation, offering an interesting alternative for creating structured side lighting.
Leola, attested from the early 1970s, distributed numerous luminaires from European manufacturers. This circulation of models explains why some Sciolari creations appear under different commercial names depending on the markets, while maintaining a consistent formal identity.
Trained in architecture, Gaetano Sciolari took over the family business Sciolari Lighting very early on. After beginnings marked by the spatial aesthetics of the 1950s, he developed a more structured language in the 1960s, based on the repetition of elements and a rigorous organization of volumes.
In this entirely chrome version, the model adopts a more direct and graphic interpretation. The chrome precisely captures light, accentuating reflections and the legibility of the structure. The overall piece gains visual tension, with a clearer and more contemporary presence.
Sciolari then collaborated with numerous international publishers, including Stilnovo, Lightolier, Helestra, and also Leola and SA Boulanger. The latter, founded in Belgium in 1945, specialized in the manufacture of metal luminaires distributed across Europe.
This ceiling light perfectly illustrates this European production distributed across several markets. Its precise and luminous chrome construction testifies to a level of manufacturing that is difficult to reproduce at an equivalent cost today.
In a contemporary interior, it integrates with ease. In a living room, it structures light without weighing down the space. In a bedroom or professional environment, it brings a clear graphic presence, halfway between 70s design and clean, modern lines.
A version combining brass and chrome of this model is also available, offering a more contrasted and warm interpretation of the same design.
