Sciolari brass and chrome ceiling lamp – Leola edition, 1970s
This brass and chrome ceiling lamp designed by Gaetano Sciolari perfectly illustrates the luminous aesthetic developed in the 1960s–1970s, between architectural rigor and exploration of material effects. This model was likely manufactured in Belgium by SA Boulanger, then distributed on the German market by Leola, a common practice at the time. Known examples display strictly identical characteristics.
Due to the robustness of its design, you can use this ceiling light as a wall sconce.
The German company Leola, documented from 1973 onwards, distributed a wide range of European lighting fixtures. It notably collaborated with international designers and published models from various manufacturers. This type of distribution explains the presence of Sciolari lighting under different commercial signatures depending on the markets.
Trained in architecture, Gaetano Sciolari took over the family business Sciolari Lighting at a very young age in the late 1940s. From the 1950s, he developed lighting influenced by the Space Age, before establishing in the following decade a more structured style, based on clean lines and controlled geometric composition.
The combination of brass and chrome then became a recurring signature of his work. This contrast between warm surface and cold reflections captures light and creates a strong visual presence, without decorative overload. The volumes remain legible, almost graphic, in a logic close to architecture.
Sciolari collaborated with numerous international publishers, including Stilnovo, Stilkronen, Lightolier, Leola and the Belgian company SA Boulanger. The latter, founded in Anderlecht in 1945, specialized in manufacturing quality metal lighting fixtures, often produced for different European markets under various names.
This model is part of this typical European production of the 1970s. Its brass and chrome structure, balanced and luminous, demonstrates a level of manufacturing that is difficult to reproduce today at equivalent cost.
In a contemporary interior, this ceiling lamp finds its place naturally. It works equally well in a living room, bedroom or professional space, providing structured light and graphic presence without excess. Its aesthetic remains current, halfway between seventies design and sober, contemporary style.
A fully chrome model, similar in every respect, is also available.
