Rolf Benz and the modular sofa in 1970s German design
Founded in 1964, Rolf Benz quickly established itself as a major player in German contemporary furniture by developing modular seating adapted to new lifestyles. In the late 1970s, the brand explored more generous forms and materials offering both comfort and visual presence.
This set illustrates this evolution, with a free composition combining a sofa, armchairs, and an ottoman, allowing for various configurations depending on the space. The velvet, here in a deep brown shade with slight green highlights depending on the light, is central to the model’s identity, characteristic of interiors from this period.
The low structure and balanced volumes reflect a quest for immediate comfort while maintaining clear lines. This type of production is part of a functional approach to design, where modularity becomes a central element of interior layout.
