Solid oak and cognac leather bench by Børge Mogensen
This Scandinavian bench comes from its original owner. Its woodwork and leather have been restored by our expert. The seat has been re-upholstered using its original leather to replace the padding, preserving its material and patina.
This solid oak and cognac leather bench, Model 3171, embodies the clean and powerful lines associated with Danish furniture designed by Børge Mogensen in the 1950s and 1960s. Its generously proportioned structure, combined with a cognac leather seat, directly evokes the aesthetic developed by the designer around natural, durable, and functional materials.
The rectilinear solid oak base highlights simple and honest joinery, typical of post-war Scandinavian modernism. The cognac leather seat adds warmth and contrast, developing over time a lively patina characteristic of quality full-grain leathers.
The overall design recalls Børge Mogensen’s iconic creations produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik, particularly the seating inspired by traditional Spanish furniture observed during his travels in the late 1950s. This approach combined robust oak structures with saddle leather elements, seeking a balance between comfort, simplicity, and longevity.
Thanks to its balanced proportions, this bench can be used in an entryway, at the foot of a bed, around a table, or as extra seating in a modernist, Scandinavian, or contemporary interior. Its timeless aesthetic also allows it to complement more raw or wabi-sabi pieces.
A piece highlighting the beauty of natural materials and the functional elegance characteristic of 20th-century Danish design.
