The Hammer chair by Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971)
The 3103 model is indeed part of the iconic chair family designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, but it possesses a distinct identity and is not grouped under the designation « Série 7 »
in common parlance. This chair is in fact better known as the « Hammer Chair » (hammer chair), due to the characteristic shape of its backrest.
- Design: Although it uses the same pressure-molded veneer technique that Arne Jacobsen developed with the Ant chair (model 3100) and the Series 7 (model 3107), the shell of the 3103 has a slightly different, wider shape and a more angular backrest than the softer curve of the 3107.
- Base: The visual difference also lies in its base. Unlike the four tapered tubular legs of the 3107, the 3103 model originally used a specific, more complex base, which is now only found on vintage examples. The model is no longer produced, which contributes to its rarity and appeal to collectors.
