The success of “wheat sheaf” tables in the wake of Coco Chanel

Made in Italy by Morex in the late 70s, this wheat sheaf coffee table fits the Hollywood Regency aesthetic. Its single-block composite mineral casting, entirely gilded, revisits the famous wheat stalk motif in an interpretation where the relief and patina nuances evoke the appearance of gilded bronze.

The wheat sheaf motif has become one of the great classics of 20th-century decorative furniture. It owes much of its fame to Coco Chanel, who saw wheat as a symbol of abundance, prosperity, and luck. Her apartment on Rue Cambon in Paris notably featured a famous wheat sheaf base table, which became one of the most iconic images of her decorative world.

This craze then inspired many French and Italian designers and manufacturers during the 1960s and 1970s. The creations of Robert Goossens for Coco Chanel, as well as certain works by Maison Baguès, helped popularize this aesthetic, which naturally found its place in the Hollywood Regency style.

This Morex coffee table follows this tradition while offering a different interpretation. Where the most famous models generally combine a metal wheat sheaf structure with a glass top, Morex favors a single-block design whose interplay of volume, relief, and light reinforces the decorative presence of the piece.
