Kho Liang Ie and the Model 020 at Artifort
The 020 lounge chair designed by Kho Liang Ie for Artifort in 1958 is part of the early explorations of post-war European modernist furniture. This 020 lounge chair by Kho Liang Ie for Artifort reflects an approach where formal reduction and build quality take precedence over any decorative effect.
The brushed steel frame, paired with a leather seat, conveys a desire for precision and clarity in the design. The 020 lounge chair rests on balanced proportions, with a low, open seat designed to offer stable comfort without excess material. This economy of means is characteristic of Kho Liang Ie’s work.
In the late 1950s, Artifort began a significant transformation under his influence, directing production toward more contemporary forms. This model 020 belongs to this pivotal period, preceding the arrival of Pierre Paulin.
This lounge chair retains a restrained, structured presence, enhanced by the contrast between metal and leather. It fits naturally into modernist or contemporary interiors, helping create a coherent, distinctive space.
