This pair of wall sconces in gilded brass and blown crystal showcases German glassmaking expertise from the second half of the 20th century, typical of the 1970s. The amber-tinted crystal diffusers provide a warm light, while the gilded brass frame highlights their relief and interplay of transparency, asserting their Hollywood Regency style. Handmade, each wall sconce reflects artisanal production in which every piece has a unique character.
A hand-shaped blown crystal wall sconce
The original Goebel card accompanying these lights states that the crystal is made from quartz, sand, lime, soda ash and potash, melted at a temperature of around 1,400°C. From this molten material, each element is shaped by hand by master glassmakers, whose gesture seeks not mechanical uniformity but the expression of true craftsmanship, reminiscent of the tradition of Murano glass workshops.
Slight variations in thickness, width or height, as well as the occasional presence of tiny air bubbles, are considered normal characteristics of this manufacture. Far from being flaws, they are the hallmark of hand-worked crystal and contribute to the authenticity of each wall sconce.
Founded in 1871, Goebel first established itself as a major porcelain manufacturer before diversifying its production over the 20th century. In the 1970s, the company also developed a range of lighting with contemporary lines, combining materials such as ceramic, glass and metal, in the spirit of the design of the time. The brand typography on this card does indeed match that found on Goebel figurines from the same period.
Almost every wall lamp is still packed in its original box and is in impeccable condition.
