Sibast Model 62A Armchair by Arne Vodder, circa 1960

The Model 62A, produced by Sibast in the early 1960s, precisely illustrates Arne Vodder’s approach, based on structural clarity and material enhancement.

The piece presented here features a solid teak frame with softened edges, extended by armrests integrated into the continuous design. The overall construction is clear, with each element discernible, free of superfluous effects, in a masterful balance between function and presence.

Teak, with its more regular grain and warm hue, offers a more homogeneous appearance than rosewood. Its subtle nuances complement the design without dominating it, reinforcing the perception of a coherent and serene ensemble. Paired with a black leather seat, it creates a measured contrast between matte surface and slightly satin material, without visual disruption. A 62A chair in rosewood is also currently on display in our gallery.

This more restrained approach to materials accentuates the utilitarian character of the piece, aligning with its intended use. The slightly reclined backrest and open seat provide this armchair with great versatility. It can be used both around a table and as an office chair, reflecting a simple and adaptable usage philosophy.

This type of construction originates from Vodder’s background, trained in Copenhagen, notably at the Kunstakademiet alongside Hans Wegner and Børge Mogensen. His time in cabinetmaker Niels Vodder’s workshop allowed him to acquire practical knowledge of wood, before continuing his training with Finn Juhl, whose influence is evident in the continuity of lines and attention to proportions.

Produced by Sibast, with whom he maintained a close collaboration from the 1950s, this model contributed to the international dissemination of Danish design, appearing in private interiors as well as institutional settings in Europe and the United States.
