Danish High-Back Chairs – Schou Andersen
These six Danish teak chairs, designed by Preben Schou Andersen, exemplify the ergonomic care applied to Scandinavian furniture during the 1970s. Their slender silhouette is based on a particularly successful interplay of curves, where the undulating high backrest naturally supports the body’s position.
This undulation is not merely aesthetic. The profile of the slats follows the movement of the back, with a curve specifically designed to embrace the lumbar region. The backrest thus offers pleasant support while maintaining the visual lightness characteristic of Scandinavian chairs from this period.
The Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik, founded in 1919 in Vejen, Denmark, belongs to this tradition of Danish cabinetmaking where precision in joinery, woodworking, and user comfort are paramount. The company notably collaborated with Kai Kristiansen, one of the important designers of post-war Danish furniture.

Their high backrest provides an elegant presence around a dining table, without visually weighing down the space. These chairs thus combine the character of antique Danish furniture with the comfort of fully refurbished seating, ready to take their place in a contemporary interior.
Restoration and Transmission of Danish Furniture
These chairs come from their first owner, who was particularly attached to their quality of manufacture and preservation. We sought to extend this care in our restoration workshop: the frames were disassembled, sanded, and oiled. The joints were cleaned, then re-glued and re-clamped to restore their original solidity. Once this work was completed, the seats were entirely re-upholstered and covered in a new ecru bouclé fabric (sourced from Les Tissus du Chien Vert), to achieve seating comfort matching the care given to the wood.
A restoration that respects the spirit of Danish furniture: pieces designed to last, be maintained, and passed down. After several decades of use, these chairs are ready to continue their story around a new table.
