Vintage Crystal Chandelier – 70s Design

With its circular shape, measuring 49 cm in diameter and only 20 cm in height, this 70s crystal chandelier adopts a particularly decorative tambour silhouette. Its crown is composed of 46 vertical textured crystal cylinders, arranged side by side around a silver-toned metal structure.

Kaiser Tambour Crystal Chandelier lit

Light diffuses through the crystal elements of the ceiling light.

The format thus combines the presence of a large round chandelier with a relatively compact design. Suspended in the center of a living room, dining room, or entrance hall, it maintains a very clear horizontal reading and avoids the downward effect of traditional pendant chandeliers.

Designed and produced by Kaiser in the early 70s, it belongs to a generation of luminaires where glass is no longer merely a diffuser but becomes the primary design element.

46 Crystal Cylinders for 360° Light Diffusion

The uniqueness of this suspension primarily lies in the treatment of its 46 crystal elements. Each hollow cylinder alternates fluted sections with more strongly modeled reliefs. Once the chandelier is lit, these surface variations catch and fragment the light, successively revealing transparent, brilliant, and more diffuse zones.

Each tube is finished with a small, slightly patinated silver-toned metal disc. Their repetition, when viewed from below, forms a regular crown around a large central frosted and textured glass disc. The rod and canopy feature the same silver-toned finish. Depending on your preference, the slight surface browning can be preserved for its patina or polished to restore a more uniform nickel-plated appearance (Soft Chrome).

The Kaiser suspension viewed from below, unlit

The silver-toned metal discs are patinated but can quickly regain the appearance of polished silver after a simple polishing with a soft cloth.

Behind this diffuser are six E27 bulbs. The light is thus distributed in two directions: laterally through the crystal cylinders and downwards through the glass disc. The light sources remain concealed, while the entire periphery of the chandelier illuminates.

This construction gives the luminaire a very different appearance when unlit or illuminated: sober and almost graphic in daylight, the crystal reveals its relief much more strongly when the six sources are lit.

Kaiser Reinterprets the Pendant Chandelier

Throughout the 60s and 70s, Kaiser developed numerous luminaires in which molded or heavily textured glass interacts with highly geometric metal structures. This research is evident in several of the brand’s luminaires from this period, from the so-called “Ice Glass” compositions to suspensions made of repeated glass elements.

Here, the geometry is particularly simple: a circle, a repetition of vertical cylinders, and a horizontal disc. This principle gives the luminaire a significant decorative presence without multiplying visible structural elements.

Details of the Kaiser ceiling light crystals

The frame, rod, and canopy currently exhibit a patina that contrasts with the transparency of the crystal. The metal can also be repolished to regain a more brilliant finish.

With a maximum height of 64 cm, a chandelier body of 20 cm, and a diameter of 49 cm, this suspension is halfway between a chandelier and a suspended ceiling light. It joins our selection of vintage and designer ceiling lights as well as the vintage chandeliers and suspensions currently available.

The electrical system is equipped with six E27 porcelain sockets, and the luminaire is supplied with six LED bulbs.
