Danish Teak Coffee Table – A/S Niels Bach Møbelfabrik, Randers

This vintage coffee table was produced in Denmark by A/S Niels Bach Møbelfabrik, a manufacturer based in Randers and active from the mid-1960s. The company’s furniture is particularly associated with teak tables, several period examples of which retain the marking “Made in Denmark – A/S Niels Bach – DK 8900 Randers” under their tops.

Officially founded in Randers in 1965, A/S Niels Bach Møbelfabrik belongs to the generation of Danish manufacturers that accompanied the international spread of Danish Modern. Unlike companies that became famous thanks to a star designer, Niels Bach remains relatively undocumented, even though its furniture reveals a production particularly attentive to wood selection and construction. Coffee tables, side tables, and extendable dining tables are the pieces most commonly encountered today.

Teak at the Heart of Danish Furniture

The design of this table largely relies on the natural qualities of the wood. Teak features a lively grain and warm tones that the sobriety of its lines allows to be fully visible. This economy of means is characteristic of Scandinavian furniture of the era: construction, proportions, and material quality constitute the essence of the decor.

The Niels Bach factory frequently uses solid teak for its tables. Several documented models feature very legible joinery, softened angles, and legs directly integrated into the tabletop structure—all details that attest to the importance given to woodworking rather than ornamentation.

A Restoration that Reveals the Teak’s Grain

The table presented here has passed through our restoration workshop. After surface preparation, the teak was nourished with oil to revive its natural color and bring out the depth of its grain without masking the material under a covering varnish.

The oil finish by saturation offers a true sensory experience, revealing the warmth of the teak, the depth of its grain, and the natural softness of its surface.

The image taken during this intervention particularly well illustrates the effect of the treatment: upon oil application, the wood immediately regains its golden-brown hues and the contrast of the grain is accentuated. This finish respects the desired appearance for this type of Danish furniture while protecting the surface for daily use.

With its sober lines and the warmth of teak, this Niels Bach coffee table integrates naturally with 1960s Scandinavian furniture as well as into a contemporary interior. Its seemingly simple construction primarily highlights what makes the furniture high-quality: beautiful proportions, carefully selected wood, and particularly legible Danish craftsmanship.
