The Rio line, the culmination of the collaboration between Roger Landault and A.B.C.

As early as 1946, designer Roger Landault (1919–1983) began a long collaboration with A.B.C. MEUBLES, following his success at the Concours du Meuble de France. From the early 1950s, this partnership helped drive the rise of signed serial furniture, an approach still innovative in post-war France, where creations were now associated with the name of their designer.

Over the next fifteen years, Roger Landault developed several major collections for A.B.C. that shaped the evolution of French furniture: Junior (1951–1954), Dakar (1955–1958), Rotterdam (1955–1956), Panama (1958–1961), Châtelaine (1960) and finally Rio, launched in the early 1960s.

The year 1955 marked a turning point in his work. As French furniture gradually moved away from the aesthetics of Reconstruction, Roger Landault adopted cleaner, lighter and more functional lines. This evolution was recognised by the Centre Technique du Bois, where he won second prize with A.B.C., as well as by the René Gabriel Prize awarded at the Salon des Arts Ménagers.

Presented as an extension of the Panama range, the Rio line fully reflects this new direction. Inspired by Scandinavian design, it favours elegant proportions, clean volumes and outstanding craftsmanship. This sideboard perfectly illustrates this mature period, in which Roger Landault combines aesthetics, functionality and high-level industrial production, making the Rio line one of the most emblematic collections of his work.
