Brutalist crystal and chrome wall sconces – 1970s design

This pair of vintage wall sconces in cut crystal and chromed metal stands out for its rigorous geometric composition, in which the repetition of forms gives the lights their Brutalist character. The six bevel-cut crystal plaques follow one another in a regular geometric arrangement. This repetition of forms gives the sconces their Brutalist character, while the transparency of the crystal and the chrome surfaces provide a counterpoint to the rigor of the design.

The crystal drops feature deep bevel cuts that catch the light and cast halo-like reflections onto the chromed-steel surfaces.

Light reflects off the beveled facets and multiplies across the chrome-lined walls of the mounts, creating an interplay of reflections between the transparent crystal and the sheen of polished metal. This interaction of materials gives the sconces an architectural presence, as decorative when unlit as when illuminated.
