Helmut Magg and Deutsche Werkstätten

This desk designed by Helmut Magg for Deutsche Werkstätten is part of the postwar German furniture revival. Trained in cabinetmaking and then interior architecture at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, Magg developed functional furniture with clean lines from the 1950s onward, where quality craftsmanship remained central. He worked notably for WK Möbel and Deutsche Werkstätten, becoming one of their key collaborators during the 1950s and 1960s.

His desks typically combine rigorous construction, lightened volumes, and integrated storage spaces, in an approach characteristic of German modernist design. Deutsche Werkstätten extended their long cabinetmaking tradition by adapting it to new postwar lifestyles and work habits. From 1953 onward, Magg notably contributed to the development of the Die Wachsende Wohnung program, originally conceived by Bruno Paul.
