Created by Mario Bellini in the late 1960s for C&B Italia, the ‘Amanta’ model illustrates the evolution of Italian furniture towards freer, more modular forms. Developed during the early years of C&B Italia — before the manufacturer became B&B Italia — this seating system supported a new way of conceiving domestic spaces, more focused on comfort and flexibility.

This set comprises 4 “Amanta” elements upholstered in white velvet, which can be used as independent armchairs or combined to form a modular living room composition. The wide molded Fiberlite shells accommodate generous cushions whose proportions accentuate the enveloping character of the model.

The contrast between the rigorously geometric structures and the softness of the white velvet gives this set a brighter, more organic interpretation. The model’s characteristic low, horizontal lines reinforce its lounge aesthetic, emblematic of 1970s Italian design.

The ‘Amanta’ system is among Mario Bellini’s important creations for C&B Italia, a foundational period preceding B&B Italia’s international development. This research into modular seating would influence several major creations by the designer over the following decade.
