Mario Bellini and the Camaleonda: a modular approach to 1970s furniture

Designed in 1970 by Mario Bellini for C&B Italia (later B&B Italia), the Camaleonda modular sofa is one of the major Italian design creations of the period. Its name, a contraction of “chameleon” and “onda” (wave), directly reflects its core design principle: adaptability and a flexible interpretation of volume.

The model is based on a system of independent modules connected by cables, rings, and carabiners, allowing the configuration to be freely modified according to space and use. This constructive device, visible and intentional, is one of the most characteristic elements of Bellini’s work.

The generous volumes, combined with deep tufting, give the piece a sculptural presence while ensuring enveloping comfort. The velvet upholstery accentuates this perception, playing with light and shade depending on the exposure.

The Camaleonda remains an iconic piece of 1970s design today, sought after for its modularity, design quality, and lasting influence on the history of contemporary furniture.
