Mario Bellini, C&B Italia and the “Amanta” system

Designed by Mario Bellini in the late 1960s, the “Amanta” model belongs to the early years of C&B Italia, a company founded in 1966 by Cesare Cassina and Piero Ambrogio Busnelli. This period precedes the birth of B&B Italia, but already heralds its spirit: industrial experimentation, modern comfort, and furniture designed as a modular system.

This set of 6 “Amanta” armchairs in black leather allows for a versatile arrangement, functioning as independent armchairs or as a modular sofa. Each module rests on a molded Fiberlite shell, a composite material combining fiberglass and resin, designed to hold independent cushions.

The model is distinguished by its very clear constructive principle: a rigid, low, and enveloping base, combined with a generous seat. This contrast between the structured shell and soft cushions gives Amanta an immediately identifiable presence in 1970s Italian design.

Unlike the other Amanta set covered in reddish-brown velvet, this black leather version offers a more architectural and sober interpretation. The material reinforces the volume design, highlights the low lines of the modules, and accentuates the lounge character of the set.

The C&B Italia branding is historically significant, as it corresponds to the model’s first editions. The reference to B&B Italia remains relevant to place Amanta within the continuity of the manufacturer’s history, which became one of the major houses of contemporary Italian design.
