Gilded bronze Buddha, Mandalay period

  • Old Burmese image of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, in bronze, refined gilding mixed with red bowl and remnants of mica on the edge of his face. Mandalay period circa 1860.
  • This posture of Buddha seated with hands in bhumisparsha mudra symbolizes the moment when Shakyamuni attains enlightenment while meditating under the Bodhi tree, touching the earth to call upon the goddess Bhumi to witness his victory over Mara, the demon of obstacles, who tries to prevent his awakening through temptation, fear and desire.
