Burmese Buddha Shakyamuni in bronze

  • This Burmese image of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, makes a gesture known as bhumisparsha-mudra, or “taking the earth as witness”.
    Made in bronze, with lost wax, the work dates from the Mandalay period (1853-1948), more likely from the 19th century.
  • The craftsman has taken particular care to express serenity and compassion, especially through the use of glass or enamel for the elaboration of his eyes.
